We Need Guns - Lots of Guns (There Is No Silver Bullet)
Trinity: “Neo, no one has ever done this before?”
Neo: “That’s why it’s going to work!”
The software industry is notoriously seeking silver bullets. Models, concepts or frameworks that miraculously can fix whatever is broken; Lean, Agile, SAFe®, DevOps... “It’s culture” we say, and then we start pouring everything which was true in the previous culture into the next, making it a hostile-takeover of everything that was already well-defined. A culture War.
This is a peacemaking talk. A brief look back on history will help us understand how we got here. And offer a divide of the new all-consuming concept DevOps from being “culture” to simply being a sensible and responsible reply to the observation that Software is Eating the World - a cheer for a programmable immutable infrastructure and unlimited access to production-like environments.
No silver bullets - just loads of ordinary led ones.
